Strengthening Brain Functioning in Adults Use it or Lose it. We used to believe that cognitive decline was simply an inevitable part of aging – that we would just have to accept that our brains would slow down, our memories fail from time to time, and our ability to learn new things dwindle. Neuroscience research over the last 20-30 years had disproved the inevitability of cognitive decline. From the oft-quoted Nun Study1 to the Bronx Aging Study2 to the 2006 ACTIVE Study3, proof has accumulated that brain function can be maintained and even improved as we age. The research further demonstrates that maintaining or improving cognitive functioning depends on keeping our minds active -- with the right kinds of intellectual and physical activity. In other words, use it or lose it. The Plastic Brain. Plasticity is the scientific term for the brain's ability to change throughout life -- to create new connections and networks among brain cells and to prune those that are not longer useful. In fact, every encounter and interaction we have in our lives causes changes in the brain. The more we experience, the more we grow. The more we treat our brains to new things (and our brains crave novelty), the stronger they become. The Right Kinds of Mental Exercise. Science is increasingly showing that substantial improvement in brain function can be achieved with the right kinds of mental exercise. Some cognitive losses can be recovered and deficits can be remediated by appropriately designed training activities. The best way to improve mental function is with mental cross-training exercises. Just as a good cross-training program at the gym develops physical fitness, a good mental cross-training program is vital to ensure that the connections among parts of the brain – the various cognitive processes that have to work together in a coordinated fashion -- are fully integrated and as efficient as they can be. Keeping our brains active with familiar challenges (crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Chess, computer games, jigsaw puzzles and Bridge Club) can help maintain cognitive function. In fact, maintenance simply requires doing something that involves conscious thought -- and that's important. However, training to actually improve mental function is quite different. BrainWare Safari is the most comprehensive cognitive development program available. It's cross-training for your brain !
