Texas Funds Neuroscience-Based Reading Interventions

The Texas legislature recently passed a bill (H.B. 1270, effective September 1, 2007 ) to require the State Commissioner of Education to establish a pilot program under which schools can provide intensive neuroscience-based intervention to improve reading and language proficiency, with special attention to increasing cognitive ability. The background and purpose of the bill cite the clear scientific evidence now available to support this approach, saying:

•  Many of our students' learning challenges, previously thought insurmountable, can now be directly addressed with neuroscience tools and learning techniques designed to effectively close the gap between human performance and potential...

•  Breakthroughs in neuroscience and brain plasticity research have shown that we can now target and activate brain function considered foundational for all learning, and which underlie language acquisition and reading skills…

•  Neuroscience-based approaches build neural networks and cognitive functions that are critical to building strong language and reading skills. They prepare students to benefit from good teachers and good curriculum…

•  The established efficacy of neuroscience and brain plasticity approaches is rapid, significant, and scientifically validated.

BrainWare Safari is the most comprehensive and affordable program which takes a neuroscience-based approach to developing cognitive skills such as attention, memory, visual and auditory processing, sensory integration and thinking – those considered the most critical for fast and effective learning.
